Abadonna

Abaddon is the Hebrew name for the Greek Apollyon, the angel of the bottomless pit, the "destroyer." Bulgakov mentions this figure of the Apocalypse in White Guard, the angel "whose name is in Hebrew Abaddon, in Greek Apollyon, which means destroyer." (Revelation 9:11) In the Russian tradition the name is usually associated with the story "Abadonna" by N. A. Polevoy and the poem "Abbadona" by V. A. Zhukovskii (1815--a translation of the epilog to a poem "Messiada" by Klopstock.)
