He swam to the buoy of a ship + rested a little behind it – then swam to another + rested behind that for a little + then proceeded – meantime now less than 20 or 30 (or 50) muskets were fired at him. The bullets often struck the water but a few inches from his head. Whether he was wounded at all I was not certain, but he continued swimming till out of reach of the muskets + then a ships boat came and took him up. To see one of my fellow creatures this deliberately fired at by others was such a scene as I never witnessed before. (woman + child taken off.)
-------During the whole day the Turks have been marching about the town in bodies - + so far as I can learn have generally killed Greeks where ever they have found them – It is said not less than 70 have been killed today, some say 200. ----Mr. M. a German came to the consul for help.
