You could define ecology as the study of how organisms effect and are effected by their surroundings, and their surroundings include the physical environment, like you could study how plants are affected by climate and that's ecology, but their surroundings also include the other organisms so you can study how plants are effected by herbivores and that's part of their surrounding, or about how prey species are affected by predators. All of those things that make up an organism's surroundings can be studied as part of ecology.
