The Evil Apartment, Bolshaya Sadovaya, No 10

Bolshaya Sadovaya, No 10 was built in 1903 in the style of Moscow Modern by the architects E. Yuditsky and A. Milkov for the tobacco merchant I. D. Pigit (whose name can be seen in the above photo). The apartments were originally let to artists. In the 1920s it was one of the first workers' communes. Bulgakov wrote about this apartment in numerous satirical works.

This is how Bulgakov's small room in the apartment looked in 1998.
