Roman Military Structure

Bulgakov researched Roman military structure in the Brokgauz-Efron encyclopedia.

Infantry:

1 legion  =10 cohorts  commanded by legate
1 cohort  =3 maniples  commanded by tribune
1 maniple  =2 centuries  commnded by 1 centurion of 2
1 century  =60-100 men  commanded by centurion

Bulgakov uses the unusual transcription "kenturiia" and "kenturion" (instead of "tsenturiia" and "tsenturion") to defamiliarize the terms.

Cavalry:

1 ala = 20 turmae of 15-30 men each.

The ala was a detachment of 300-600 men, usually named for the nationality they were recruited from.
