Novodevichy Convent

Clearly visible from Sparrow Hills, the Novodevichy [New Maidens'] Convent was founded in 1524, though most of its present appearance dates from the 17th century. It was here that Boris Godunov was elected tsar, and Peter the Great's power-hungry sister Sophia was imprisoned here as well. The six-tiered ornately-decorated belfry rises 236 feet. Today Bulgakov is buried in the cemetery attached to the monastery.
