In each of these Ìåä áÙäêÉ , ÇäåÕÏÑ functions as ÇäáÇÙä . Thus, grammatically, the first sentence means, studying in the library for two hours is possible for me; the second, the buying of some new sheets and towels is necessary; and the third, the arranging of everything has taken place. In English, these constructions are expressed differently: the first sentence could be translated it is possible for me to/ I can..., the second it is necessary to/ we have to..., and the third using a passive, everything has been.... Since Arabic has no word corresponding to it that may be used as an impersonal subject, ÇäåÕÏÑ functions as the subject of these sentences. Note that the verbs êåãæ and êÌÈ are fixed expressions and are not conjugated, while the verb Êåñ usually agrees with its subject, ÇäåÕÏÑ . For example, in ¨³© above, Êàåñ agrees with ÊÑÊêÈ , whereas in the following example, ÊàåñàÊ agrees with its subject ÇäåâÇÈäÉ : ´à  ÊàåñàÊ ÇäåâÇÈäÉ Èêæ ÇäÑÆêÓêòæ ® ÇäåÕÏÑ can also function as ÇäåÈÊÏà in impersonal Ìåä ÇÓåêÉ that are similar in structure to the Ìåä áÙäêÉ that we examined above. We pointed out earlier that ÇäåÕÏÑ is equivalent in meaning to Ãæò « ÇäåÖÇÑÙ ÇäåæÕèÈ .
