Week
I. Early Photography: The Art of the Daguerreotype, 1
Reading assignment
Now that we have mastered the conferencing program, I'd
like you to do some reading in Robert Hirsch's book, Seizing the
Light. If you do not have a copy of the book yet, click on the e-reserve
text link on the coursework home page.
If you have lots of time, please read the first two chapters
(pp. 3-47.) If you don't have time to do that, please read "Camera
Vision" (pp. 5-6), "Images through Light" (pp. 11-18),
"What is a Daguerreotype?" (pp. 27-28), and "The Art
of the Daguerrean Portrait" (pp. 35-38).
Conferencing assignment
Look at all of the photographs that illustrate these two
chapters. Which one do you like the best? Why? Share your choice in
a short conference posting. Please title it "Favorite Photo."
To get to the conference, click on the link to conference website (see
header or footer), then click on your conference group.
When you are finished posting your contribution, close
the conferencing window to return to this page, then click on the right-facing
arrow at the bottom of the page to advance to the next window.
