LATE JULY 1847
July 26, August 5

Monday July 26th 1847. A heavy shower stopt [sic] our mowing at about 10 o clock. It has ceased now (noon) J Dewey is here to help us ½ month $12. Horace & wife & Gratise came here last Thurs. We were glad to see them, We had pleasant times since they came, Gratise is a cherub & Elle is a noble girl & pretty & a grand singer. But we miss Laura much. –I cant write with such a pen & paper.

Thurs. Aug 5th Several days have past since I have written since when we have had a pleasant time here with our friends; Jane Cummins came here last Sunday with me, Ellen & Betsy who went over there to meetitng [sic]. She is a pretty girl as is Gratise & Ellen, we have singing, playing on fiddles, flute & harp & dancing, --- &c. pleasant times but they will soon pass away & leave us sad. We are very busy haying these days 2/3 done In the day time we labor hard, but in the eve we spend a pleasant hour; free from pain or care. John Dewey is at work for us at $1.1 2/3 per day. We have a good many rainy days to stop our progress, 4 good hay days & then 4 rainy ones I note a [code]
