I was not at home the whole of the evening,-Between seven
and eight I went down to Ozias’s-found Louisa alone, and we spent
the rest of the evening talking over-“old times”. From Louisa’s
account-their sixteenth of May was within a day or two of ours, and now
they have been married nearly two months. Louisa says she never was happy
as she is now (you know-her way of talking) and that she is “happier
and happier every day she lives”.-I don’t doubt it is true,
Phillip, but it amuses me greatly to hear her talk. She “did not know
that she knew as much about house keeping as she does, and she gets along
much easier than she expected” he, he. I have played whist- there
twice this fall. Oh, if you were here, Dear Phillip, what fine times we
might have. That evening, nothing was said about you till Ozias returned,
just-as the clock struck ten. As I got up to do, I said to Ozias, this is
the Captain’s Birth-day. “What’s said he, this, the Captains
Birthday. You poor distressed creature you Em; Why didn’t you tell
me of it before I would have had a oyster supper at least.-As it is, we
will drink to the Captains health most heartily”. Oh, yes, said Louisa,
we will drink to the Captains health with great pleasure.- And sister Em!!
What should she say? Whether-she had any good wishes for Mr.Battell or not,
I will leave you to judge.- At any rate she did not then express any. Ozias
then went for his wine, and to his disappointment-found he has not any in
the house. But he would not give up, though sister Em told him he had better,
it was to late. But he started for the stove, and returned with his decanter
filled about quarter past ten. He then gave his boast-The Captains Birthday-
“May he find on each anniversary three as sincere friends as he has
this”. (He did not expect, Phillip, that it would ever be written
down) after we drank to his, he called for Louisa and sister Em,- and what
should sister Em be, Phillip- she did not know, and merely said, (very sincerely
though), “Health, prosperity and happiness, to the Captain”.
Louisa gave you her good wishes, but I cannot remember exactly what they
were I know about the same time, she turned to Ozias and said, “I
wish you would write to Battell, Ozias, if you will, I will add a postscript,
and I guess we can persuade him to come and see us”. Ozias promised
that he would, but that is the last you will ever hear of it. |
