Middlebury Sept 2. 1827.
Do not be disappointed when you open this to see a short and hasty letter
from me. You must forgive it, Dear Phillip, for I cannot now do differently.
You own last was every thing I could wish it, and I hope before long to
answer it to your satisfaction, either with my lips or pen. But I will tell
you, Phillip, why I am obliged to send you so poor a letter now. Tomorrow
morning I expect to start for - What part of the globe do you think it is,
Phillip?- But I won’t try your patience any longer, it is no other
place than Litchfield. Just think, Phillip,- Connecticut,-the same dear
state where you are. I am very happy of the thought of going, and should
be the happiest being on earth if Ozias were going with me, for then I should
be certain of seeing you, now I can hope to, but am afraid I shall not.
I am going in a chaise with Horatio; and in company with old Mr.Largeant
and his wife. Horatio is rather young to slant a journey with, but he has
altered very much since you saw him. He is nearly as tall as Ozias, and
having been from home so much of late. He appears much more manly than last
summer of think he ha uncommonly good judgment for a person of his age and
should be as willing to go with him as any one of know of, except Ozias.
It is impossible for Ozias to go. This month the court sits here, and he
now has a great deal of beliefs, and Pa is unwilling he should leave it.
We are going by the Conn. River, through Brattleborough, to Hartford. Pa
wished us to go that way than we may have as far as Springfield, old Mr.Largeants
Company. I know there is a road to Litchfield nearer than to go to Hartford,
that goes directly through he place where you are, and have spoken of it
once or twice to Pa, but he says, “Oh no you had not better go that
way the road is not good you will ??? to see Hartford, and better go there
by all means” He does not know, Phillip, how much happier I should
be to be near Hartford than all the other Hartford’s in the world.
But I shall with to do just as he says about it. Litchfield will be the
nearest |
