Sat. June 16, 1821:


When I went out to breakfast this morning I was told that 16 or 18 Greeks were killed last night + this morning, - that the Turks had surrounded the houses of the Pasha, the Moollah and the other principal officers and forbid their coming out. – A Russian vessel yesterday attempted to leave the port wh. was suspected of having provisions + ammunition on board for the Greek Insurgents. The Turks stopped her + now they are determined to search her. – At 9 O’clock I went up to the Consul’s terrace to observe what was going on. The Turks were moving in bodies along the Marine. Some Greeks were concealed in + near an unfinished stone house just North of us. One of them probably fear-
