     It is reported that the Turkish fleet have commenced their attack on Samos, have taken 2 Gr. Vessels + 1 or 2 villages. –

Thurs. July 19:


     Mr. P. Z. tells me that in the last night 3 Turks broke open a Greek house in order to obtain women. The women cried out + the Pasha’s guards came + killed one of the Turks + took the other two to the Pasha. –
     At dinner we had a long conversation about the accounts from Naivali: Mr. P.Z. says that many Turks made themselves rich by the spoils they took there. One man from Smyrna brought away money + property to the amount of 30 or 40,000 piastres ($5,000). – A Turk told Mr. Z. that a Turk of Smyrna brought away a handsome Gr. girl wh. he offered to sell for 1000 piastres. The girl told him that her father would give more + the Turk kept her till her father sent + gave 3000. – Some girls are said to have been sold for 7 or 800—piastres. It is reported that the richest among the Greeks of Naivali after being taken on board the Gr. Vessels were killed + thrown overboard by the Greeks for the sake of their money. -
