Fri. June 1:
Today there was another alarm –
At 11. (Seid)? Mohamet Effendi, or as he writes his name Mohamed
Sayed Albakaly Effendi, called on me. We read the alphabet, in Arabic
and in English. I enquired about the Turkish navy at Constantinople.
He says they have 4 three deckers, on of wh. Carries 125 guns. 10
other ships of the line – 6 – 54s – 6 –
36s – 5 – 20s - + 30 or 40 bombs + gun boats. He thinks
that when the captain Pasha comes down with the fleet the Insurgents
will be very easily subdued. –
This evening it is reported that the Turkish vessels from the
Dardanelles? have come down to Mytilene. –
Sat. June 2:
In the course of 24 hours there have been 10 Greeks assassinated.
Mr. Werry tells me that when the Ionian was killed the other day
he sent to the Pasha who sent and took the two men who committed
the murder and put them into a vessel to send them into banishment
at Tunis. The (garrisaries?) immediately manned some boats + took
the men out of the vessel by force + threatened if they were again
molested that they would put the whole town into confussion
