Burlington House
Cambridge England
July 28 1895
Dear Father,
we arrive here last night having traveled all day in a special car
from Windemere expecting a short 1hr stop at Dr. Wlliam Briggs M.D.
L.L.B., R.C.S., F.R.A.S. who is the owner of Burlington House as is
interesting in out party on Mr. Newson’s account as Mr. Newson
has been useful to him in seeing contracts from Harpes, Dr. Briggs entertained
us at his house with a musical eveing and we met a number of the people
connected with the university and were served with a substantial supper.
After the ladies left we had a “smoker” also a musical at
which we heard English college songs and all kinds of stories until
far into the night. The refreshments at the smoker consistsed of “Canadian
Club Whiskey” and Havana Cigars.
I found your letters (2) and was delighted to see them although it made
ma homesick to find that your new _____has time that you write and I
hope it will be over the next time I hear from you. If it gets worse
I will come home to take care of you any time you say[.]
I will try to give you a brief of out journey thus far tho I can not
make it very interesting. We were sick very little coming over. I was
pretty bad the first night but felt very well from there on until the
seventh day when we had a big blow. I was very glad of this and the
____ waves were a delight until we changed out course and got shaken
up. Then I went below.
When the coast of Ireland met our view on the ninth day you never saw
a more enthusiastic crowd. I don’t know [if] I have seen any thing
prettier. The coastline is beautiful – very much like the Adirondacks
only we were very near and they were verdant green. We skirted this
coast for hours[.] Every body on the store side of the ship watching
the beautiful green fields, hedges, roads, and houses. Finally we came
within 200 yards of shore and passed between Torey Island and the mainland
[Donegal Co.]. When we reached Moville a tender came alongside and took
off 2 or 3 hundred passengers.
