_____ also lived here and the tavern where he used to drink so much
still sells the best of Austrian wine (they say)[.] There is a magnificent
cathedral in imitation of St. Peters Rome, and libraries rich in rare
books, collections of curiosities and a cemetery with inviting inscription
“said of it by ___”
“ The strange wanderer, coming from afar
“ Though none of his dear ones lie mouldering here
“Yet loves to tarry, where beauty is guardian of the dead.
30000 people were once banished from Salzburg for being protestants
and religious persecution has been rank here[.]
The crowing glory is of course the lofty and magnificent fortified
castle which crowns the hill, but how can I give you any account of

the customs of the people to such an extent as to make them, (the
customs,) quite distinct from those of other cities.
I have met some pleasant people here including a very pleasant fellow
from New York: and the Bouners of New Orleans whom I mentioned before
are also here and I have been with them all day.
Next I go through the wild scenery of the Black Forest and soon hope
to be amongst the Alps. Shall hope to be bale to write you from Strassburg[.]
Lovingly Yours
