spring into their minds without labour & without instruction. Let them but
open their eyes to the true state of thigns and they will see that from the
north to south from the east to the west public institutions are created for
their improvement that no such provision is made, we cannot arrive to that perfection
which is only gradually to be attained.
But let us no longer look at the gloomy picture of the past or present condition
of woman in society. Let us rather think of the station in which we are permitted
the delightful hope that a few more years shall find her. Instead of beholding
her the slave of ignorance or the dupe of flattery we behold her cultivated
by a judicious education, moving in a sphere of enlightened assistance and benevolent
regards to all whom she can benefit – and thus becoming ennobled in the
