Vermont Male Education in theMid-1800's

These documents will give the reader a look at education in Vermont from the persepectives of an educator and also a student. Most of the diaries and compositions range from 1843-1846.

The early compositions of George A. Weeks, an elementary student from Salisbury, provide an interesting look into Vermont education in the mid-19th century. These eleven compositions over the span of six years, from 1843 to 1849, display Weeks’ views on various subjects as well as his literary progress over time.
Francis B. Paine was an educator in Vermont. His journal entries are written from 1845 to 1847. These nine journal entries give the reader a sense of what being a teacher entailed in the mid-1800s. His entries cover topics from his curriculum to his stay with host families.
