Knife Game

pg. 158 of The Boy's Own Book

The object of The Flying Feather, a girl's game, was to keep a feather, symbolizing female fragility, in the air by blowing on it. Girls were instructed to play safe, calm, indoor games [2].

In contrast, the object of The Balanced Stick, a boy's game, was to balance a stick with two blades attached on one's finger. Blades are a symbol of male's toughness demonstrated through his hunting abilities. Boys were permitted and encouraged to play more dangerous and exciting games [4].
