The Garden Ring [Sadovoe kol'tso]
aka Sadovaya St.

The outer of two major circular roads that ring Moscow (now there is a third as well). The Garden Ring and the Boulevard Ring are streets laid out over the former site of walls around the city. The Garden Ring, 16 km in circumference, was created in the early 1800s as a tree-lined boulevard, replacing the city's outer wall. The trees were felled when the road was widened in the 1930s (according to legend, so that war planes could land there!).Most of the novel is set inside the Garden Ring, which today defines central Moscow. Both the apartment of Likhodeev/Berlioz/Woland and the Variete theater are located on the ring, and Patriarch's Ponds, where the novel begins, is a block in.
