This is an advanced course in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) to provide students with extensive exposure to authentic texts in MSA (though materials in the modern dialects will also be used) with a higher level of elaboration and complexity, drawn from a wide range of subjects and sources, including textbooks for advanced Arabic, newspapers, magazines, TV and radio broadcasts, and short stories. We will focus on enhancing learners’ linguistic proficiency in all four language skills, introducing them to further cultural aspects of the Arab world, as well as engaging them in a variety of tasks so they can use MSA to write and talk about a wide range of issues of their interest.

There's no textbook for this course. Rather, we will be using materials from a variety of sources, including some textbooks for Advanced Arabic. Reading materials will be drawn from newspapers, magazines, and short story collections. We will also use materials from a couple of textbooks that include texts in MSA primarily used for Arabic learning. These are:

Brustad, K., Al-Batal, M., and Al-Tonsay A. Al-Kitaab fi Ta'llum Al-'arabiyya: Part III.

Frangieh, Bassam K. Anthology of Arabic literature, culture, and thought from pre-Islamic times to the present. New Haven : Yale University Press, 2005.

Dickins, James, and Janet C.E. Watson. Standard Arabic: An advanced course.New York: Cambridge University Press, 1999.

Rammuny, R. Advanced Standard Arabic. 1994.

Listening texts will be drawn primarily from Arabic radio and TV broadcasts, and from recorded materials of other Arabic textbooks.

This is going to be a reading-intensive, listening-intensive, speaking-intensive, and more or less also writing-intensive class. Aspects of Arabic grammar, vocabulalry, and pronunciation will also be covered within the tasks assigned for developing language skills. Well, it’s an advanced class, so you shouldn’t expect anything less than “intensive”. Here’s your course requirements.

First, there will be take-home assignments as well as in-class assignments. These include reading and listening comprehension tests, as well as grammar and vocabulary tests. Speaking activities will be done in class (in the form of conversations between the instructor and students, as well as among the students themselves), as well as out of class (in the form of recording conversations with other students in class and/or Arabic speakers on specific topics). Writing activities will also be assigned on a regular basis.

There’s going to be two exams: a midterm and a final.

A research paper on a topic of the student’s choice that relates to Arabic language and culture is also required, and so is an oral presentation of that paper in class. Guidelines for topic selection and paper writing will be posted on the website and distributed in class in due time.

Here's how each course requirement contributes to your overall percentage in the course:

A+	97% plus
A	93% plus to 97%
A-	90% plus to 93%
B+	87% plus to 90%
B	83% plus to 87%
B-	80% plus to 83%
C+	77% plus to 80%
C	73% plus to 77%
C-	70% plus to 73%
D	60% plus to 70%
F	Less than 60%

أهداف المقرر الدراسى

يهدف هذا المقرر الدراسى إلى الارتقاء بمستوى الكفاءة اللغوية للطلاب فى المهارات الأساسية الأربعة: القراءة والكتابة والاستماع والحديث، وذلك من خلال استخدام قدر كبير ومتنوع من النصوص العربية المقروءة والمسموعة والمرئية. وإلى جانب ذلك سنتطرق كذلك إلى النواحى اللغوية المتعلقة بالنطق والمفردات والقواعد النحوية التى ترد فى النصوص المدروسة. وأخيرا سوف نتناول فى هذه المادة الكثير من الجوانب الثقافية والحضارية فى العالم العربى من خلال باقة من النصوص الأدبية والفكرية على مدار الفصل الدراسى.

مصادر المادة الدراسية

ليس هناك كتاب مقرر لهذه المادة، وإن كنا سنختار نصوصاَ من بعض المصادر المكتوبة خصيصاً للمستوى المتقدم فى اللغة العربية مثل:

1. الكتاب فى تعلم العربية، الجزء الثالث، تأليف كرستن بروستاد ومحمود البطل وعباس التونسى. الدروس من 7 إلى 10 فقط.

2. اللغة العربية للمستوى المتقدم Standard Arabic: An advanced course ، تأليف James Dickins و Janet Watson، 1999.

3. مختارات من الأدب والثقافة والفكر العريى، لبسام فرنجية، 2005.Anthology of Arabic literature, culture, and thought from pre-Islamic times to the present.

4. اللغة العربية للمراحل المتقدمة، لراجى رامونى. The University of Michigan Press.

وإلى جانب ذلك سوف ندرس مجموعة كبيرة من النصوص المختارة من مصادر أصلية كالصحف والمجلات ومحطات الإذاعة وقنوات التلفزيون العربية، وكذلك بعض النصوص الأدبية كالقصص القصيرة والمسرحيات ذات الفصل الواحد.

وسوف أقوم بوضع معظم هذه النصوص قيد الحجز المادى أو الالكترونى فى المكتبة الرئيسية، وكذلك على موقع المادة على الانترنت:

معايير التقييم

1. الحضور الدائم والمشاركة الفعالة فى أنشطة الصف المختلفة. (20%)

2. الواجبات: سوف تكون هناك واجبات خارج الصف (غالباً فى شكل اختبارات) لتقييم مستوى الطلاب بشكل منتظم فى المهارات اللغوية الأربعة إلى جانب المفردات والقواعد الترجمة. وسوف تشكل هذه الواجبات النشاط الرئيسى للطلاب طوال الفصل الدراسى. (30%)

3. الامتحانات: سوف يكون هناك امتحانان، الأول فى نصف الفصل الدراسى (أكتوبر) والثانى فى نهاية الفصل الدراسى (ديسمبر). (كل امتحان له 15% من التقييم النهائى).

4. بحث مكتوب باللغة العربية حول موضوع يختاره الطالب باستشارة المدرس، مع قيام الطالب بتقديم عرض شفوى للبحث داخل الصف فى نهاية الفصل الدراسى. (15% للبحث المكتوب و5% للعرض الشفوى)

سوف أتبع فى تقييم أداء الطلاب سياسة جامعة ميدلبرى الخاصة بميثاق الشرف التعليمى كما هو منصوص عليها هنا:
