David Crystal's "The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language". It's a good general reference for some of the topics that we'll be covering in this class.

Language Myths, edited by Laurie Bauer and Peter Trudgill. An interesting collection of essays discussing some of the common (mis)beliefs about language.
