CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN GEORGE HOWE AND LORETTE WOLCOTT 1861-1865 George G. Howe and Lorette E. Wolcott were both native Vermonters who lived just a few towns apart. The two were close friends early in life and when George was sent to the battle fields of the Civil War the two kept in touch. Their relationship escalated from a simple friendship into a deep love. When George returned from the Civil War the two were married in 1866. Lorette gave birth to their first child in 1867. Sadly, she died in 1868 while in labor with the couples' second child. George and Lorette's letters provide a valuable insight into the life lived by Vermonters during the time period around the Civil War.
