Evolution of the School Chorus and Glee CLub
Songs like those mentioned and on the previous page, would be performed by a group like the one shown here, the 1909 Middlebury COllege Glee Club. This group, with fourteen voices and and quintet of instrumental accompaniment, this ensemble woul lead the rest of the school through the song at school events like the Centennial Celebration.
Up through the infamous performace which gave Middlebury its current Alma Mater, the men and the women of the College had separate Glee Clubs, even though since the early 1900's, men and women had combuned to form the School Choir. (see below)
By the 1950's the College Choir had reached it full size, comparable to its size today.
The Glee Glee Clubs remained separate entities, however. Though the College Choir remained a steadfast foundation of student vocal performance at Middlebury, the Men's and Women's Glee Clubs eveolved into the College A Capella groups (below), which continue to grow in number and popularity.
