Tuesday evening -eleven and past- from the lateness of the
hour you think Philip, I have been to the Assembly, but I have not. Last
night of Horatio’s friends called and spent the evening- urged me
very much to go the ball – called for “I see them on their winding
day”- I never can play that, Philip, without remembering and feeling
where I heard it first. It was you that sung it, Philip, the night we walked
to the snow in company with Osias and Louisa. We were walking on the banks
of the creek and Osias near enough to hear and call to the “Capt’n
to –sing again.” After Mr. Wing left last evening I wrote a
few lines. But it was late, and I thought I should finish before the mail
would leave this morning, but did not and to night as I moved a table before
the fire to write Horatio concluded that “as he stay’d from
the Ball because I did we ought to play wish if he could get a fourth person.”
Just then Jen Holley, and you perhaps remember Mother is very fond of the
game, -We played till the clock struck eleven, and now, Philip, I am determined
not to sleep till I have finished this letter. Do you wish to hear, Philip,
what has passed in mind while playing this evening? Were you sitting by
me now, Dear Philip, I could not perhaps say that I had been thinking harshly
of you, but I have been been thinking of you, and of the long time since
you graduated, and can’t but feel, Philip, that the least I can think
of your indifference of finding a place to remain is a perfect indifference
to me. But I have thought kindly of you too- perhaps even more so for knowing
I had distrusted you. You know, Philip, I have always been ready to believe
any arrangement you or your Father could make was “for the best,”
and do still, but can’t help feeling you have not the anxiety you
once had for a home of your own. |
