- gone on board of vessels. The Turkish mob have put to death the Moollah + 1 or 2 other of the officers of the town, on the ground I am told of suspicions of their having received bribes in order to let Greeks leave towns. Turks were just going to fire on a boat + Mustapha, stopped them.
     Mr. Werry asked come of the Turks who were going by where they had been + they replied that they had been to sacrifice, referring to killing Greeks. –
     Mr. Werry in speaking to me about bribery among the Turks said the governor of Smyrna (whose head the Captain Pasha cut off a few years ago) used to say “Only give me money enough + I will bribe the Gr. Signore himself or any man under him.”
     This evening the noise of guns has subsided + we hope for a quiet night though we are not without fears/ I desire to commend my body + soul to God + be down prepared for whatever the event of the night may be. -

     The Turks continue the work of destruction. They have broken open a great number of houses, killed the men + carried off the women. In the morning I left my room + went to Mr. Bantennep’s + then on board the U. States where are the families of the Messers Bantennep’s + spent the day with them in reading the ss. conversations -
