- At eve, I returned to the Consuls + spent the evening with him + his family. There has been a meeting of the Consul’s + the Russians have finally agreed to terms which the Turks accept respecting the examination of the vessel, but as this is only one among many causes of the evils we suffer it is by no means likely to restore us to tranquility.
      Late in the evening I went to the gate + 30 or 40 Turkish guards came there. The commander said that a new arrangement was made for the defense of the towns, that each regiment of Janisarries was to take a particular port + defend it with their lives, that they belonging to the first regiment had the first choice + took Tranle Street – that they are 600 strong + will defend the street.
