Military Service Having graduated from West Point as an Engineer, Justus was assigned to design and maintain several fortresses in the Northeast. His first assignment was ?. When war broke out in 1812, he was sent back to Vermont, where he worked on building fortifications in Burlington, VT. By this time his rank was ?. Letters Home After he left the Army, Justus traveled to Missouri, where he indulged in increasingly reckless land speculation. St. Louis The bulk of our information on Justus Post comes to us via the Missouri Historical Society. Richard Gentry, a descendant of Justus, compiled selections from his letters home upon the occasion of the letters' donation to the Historical Society. His intent was to provide a look at the early days of St. Louis. Mr. Gentry contacted Middlebury College with request about Justus's student records, and then mailed the College a copy of his paper.
