The
Northern Galaxy Comments on the Mexican War |
Middlebury’s newspaper in
the 1840s was the Northern Galaxy. The paper reflected
the antiwar sentiment of most Vermonters. Editorials questioned
the motivations and judgment of the Polk Administration, yet the
paper also included riveting dispatches about battles and troop
movements and even occasionally gloried in U.S. military conquests.
The following excerpts reflect the range of war-related reportage
in the period 1845-1848. |
