World War 1 Letters
During World War 1, Middlebury College
created a War Committee which took on several responsibilities,
but this committee's main purpose was to keep those students and
alumni at war connected with home and the College. Letters were
an important part of this process as several professors wrote to

Professor Sanford (pictured right) was
a commissioner for the Middlebury War Committee. He played a major
role in keeping students and alumni at war connected with the College.
The most common way of maintaining this connection was through the

writing process that went on during World War 1. Although not part
of the War Committee, Skillings wrote several letters to students
