Wed., 1/5 -- Introduction -- SDL ILC1 and Special Collections

Introductions, explanation of syllabus, discussion of some exemplary websites.

At 11:00, we will move to the Library for an orientation to materials in Special Collections. Students will begin exploring The Undergraduate and other records that relate to how the campus responded to various wars in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.


Thurs., 1/6 -- Technology workshop -- SDL ILC1

Mack Roark will lead a Dreamweaver and scanning workshop. He will help us to begin setting up a template for our online exhibits.

Prior to class, please read and take notes on the following essays on web design:

Paula Petrik, "Top Ten Mistakes in Academic Web Design," History Computer Review (May 2000)

Carl Smith, "Can You Do Serious History On The Web?," AHA Perspectives (February 1998).

Mon., 1/10 -- First visit to Sheldon Museum -- SHELDON

Orientation to materials at the Sheldon Museum. We will look at selected manuscripts, publications, and ephemera relating to patriotism, war, and private life in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Vermont.

I will distribute individual research assignments using Sheldon materials in order to expedite our research this week.

For Monday, read Stameshkin, The Town's College.


Wed., 1/12 -- The College and War -- SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

First full day of research on how the campus was affected by and responded to various wars.


Wed., 1/12 -- Group 1 meets at the Sheldon from 1:00 until 3:00 for small group research

Thurs., 1/13 -- The College and War -- SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

Read and discuss Stameshkin, The Strength of the Hills. Continue work on Middlebury College in wartime.

Continue work on manuscripts and other materials related to private life and patriotism in Middlebury; work on scanning materials for exhibits.


Tues., 1/18 -- Extra Class -- Technology workshop -- SDL ILC1

Work on preparing Dreamweaver pages incorporating digitized materials from Special Collections and the Sheldon Museum.


Wed., 1/19 -- The College and War -- SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

Continue work in Special Collections on Middlebury in wartime.


Wed., 1/19 -- Group 1 meets at the Sheldon from 1:00 until 3:00 for small group research


Thurs., 1/20 -- The College and War -- SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

Complete work on manuscripts and other materials related to private life and patriotism in small-town Vermont; work on scanning any remaining archival materials.


Tues., 1/25 -- The College and War -- SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

Complete work in Special Collections on Middlebury College history project.


Wed., 1/26 -- Technology Workshop -- SDL ILC1

Finish assembling web pages.
