On the 20th, as the ship was nearing England, the American flag was taken down and replaced by the Russian Man-of-War flag with the consent of the crew. As the ship pulled into Southampton Harbor, First Mate Dale helped set up the rigging of the ship and prepared to hoist large supplies of coal on board. Having been at sea for almost a month, some of the crew members became uncontrollable. Some ran away and one of the ship's brig boats was stolen. Nevertheless, the ship still had several visitors before it continued onward toward St. Petersburg. Also, a new pilot was added to the crew to lead them through the North Sea towards Russia. |
