Crane's first diary was written as a young boy in 1909 during a trip to France, England, and Scotland. This trip lasted from June 24 to September 4, 1909. His diary covers the entire trip from start to finish, starting with his departure on a steamship out of New York City and ending when he leaves London for New York on the R.M.S. Mauretania. In these accounts he is relatively young as he refers to his father as “Dadie,” but at the same time is old enough, in an American way, to make fun of the French crew members at every chance he gets. This diary also includes early pictures taken with his Kodak camera while he was abroad.
