Crane Diaries May 13, 1916

Saturday May 13th 1916
This morning all went well until around 10:30 when a call came in for Paguy which fell to me. The car was hard to start but we finally got underway, picked up a coucher and sailed off to Vaucouleurs (10). Nothing of important occurred along the way. I got out and opened and shut the windows according as it became hot and cold, and I think every time I did it we poor coucher thought we had arrived and has three disappointments. They chased me over to Chalaines (11) from the Vaucouleurs hospital and I left them him at the chateau, which is apparently quite an old building and would be very attractive were it not situated right in the middle of the town. Had lunch on the way back at “Blenod-les- Toules” (12), at quite an attractive little in. I had oeufs au la platte (13), a huge platter of fried potatoes, a big chop, cake, wine and bread, and this whole delectable meal only cost me 2 tn. 50 which by the way I got back from Perry when I returned. I didn’t give the lady any tip, perhaps this was a grave error but then I will probably never go there again so I don’t see that it makes much difference. She sort of eyed the money when I gave it but whether it was owing to short-sightedness or insinuation I couldn’t tell. Visited canteen in afternoon.
