William Crane had a range of different jobs and activities throughout the month of May detailing his experience as a World War I ambulance driver stationed in France. Crane does not describe any horrible tragedies or deaths as one would expect from an ambulance driver. He is more fixated on what he ate for lunch or what intervals the troops were stationed at the time. Crane is often concerned with the weather and the whereabouts of his friends such as Rantoul. He also goes into great detail about the military battle plans and material, while criticizing the French’s strategy claiming that it was ineffective and unsuccessful. His days usually consist of anything from going to mass, to waiting for mail and even wandering around the canal and snapping pictures.
