On Grammar, Geography, and Arithmetic
Dec 30th, 1843
On grammar geography and arithmetic.
1st Grammar is a very useful study. It teaches us how to speak the English language carefully. It learns us to avoid speaking the old landish expressions that I have often heard spoken and have spoken them myself. Orthography teaches us to spell. Etymology teaches us how to form all the words of the English language. Syntax teaches us how to arrange or form words into sentences correctly. And now I have no more to say on grammar.
2nd Next comes Geography.
Geography teaches us of the world throughout. It teaches us of Europe and Asia and what animals live there. It teaches us all about them but the most of us have not been there. The Chinese are very jealous people. They have got very large city that no body can enter but themselves.
Now I have no more to say about geography.
3rd Next comes arithmetic.
Arithmetic teaches how to do sums and how to do sums in our head’s. most every day we have some thing to do about arithmetic. When one begins to study arithmetic he thinks it is very hard and indeed it is to me. I don’t know how it is to other folks. And now I must close.
