Shishmaref--
originally called "Kigiktaq"-- is a village of 538 located
on Sarichef Island in the Chukchi Sea, above the Bering Strait.
Recent storms have caused heavy erosion on this barrier island,
requiring the relocation of several houses and the construction
of a seawall. Villagers rely on traditional subsistence foods
like walrus, seal, polar bear, and fish.

As with many of the villages, the people
of Shishmaref are very friendly and fun to talk with.

Shishmaref, on a barrier island on the
Chukchi Sea, bears the brunt of many a storm. Erosion has
taken its toll-- 14 houses were relocateddue to a storm in
1997, and a sea wall was constructed to help prevent further
damage.

Community members practice subsistence
hunting of seals, polar bears, walrus, and whales. Here the
meat is hung out to dry in the early summer sun.
|
Shishmaref school has 178 students. This
banner in the school gymnasium illustrates nicely what is
important to the people of Shishmaref.
