The Progetto Italica Corso di Lingua developed by the Notre Dame/Chicago group will be navigable by independent learners by means of a syllabus function which will detail recommended didactic itineraries. Teachers of Italian can also utilize the same syllabus function to integrate videocourseware from Progetto Italica in existing class syllabi as a complement to existing textbooks and according to diverse pedagogical philosophies and styles.

To illustrate this syllabus function we have created three sample syllabi to demonstrate possible utilizations of the syllabus function including:

• A grammar-based itinerary
• A culture-based itinerary
• An itinerary which integrates courseware materials into an existing university course.

Nota bene: These syllabi are only illustrative at this time. The state of the courseware in development is not currently sufficient to support the courses described in these syllabi. For example, extensive exercise materials will be added to all levels of the individual units and more detailed course itineraries will eventually be plotted using the syllabus function.

Grammar-based Itinerary

In the grammar-based syllabus the student takes the grammatical explanation and exercise materials as the point of departure for each unit. Viewing the videos according to the syllabus plan and completing the listening and comprehension exercises will offer the student authentic exemplification of the grammatical points covered. Cultural and lexical lesson material and exercises are to be considered and completed as far as desired.

Culture-based Itinerary

In the culture based syllabus the student takes the cultural and lexical pages and exercises as points of departure for each unit. Viewing the videos according to the plan of the syllabus and completing the listening and comprehension exrecises will will offer the student authentic exemplification of the cultural points covered. Cultural and lexical lesson material and exercises are to be considered and completed as far as desired.

Integrated Itinerary

The videocouresware developed for Progetto Italica will be useful to teachers interested in exposing their students to concise authentic exemplifications of topics covered in their courses as well as to those instructors seeking supplementary explanatory and exercise materials in both the grammatical and cultural areas.

To create a syllabus integrating videocourseware materials from the Progetto Italica Language Course teachers will be able to query the database in order to identify videos and other materials available for integration into their courses. For demonstration purposes the example below integrates the limited number of videocourseware units currently available with topics culled from a widely-used elementary Italian textbook Oggi in Italia (Merlonghi-Merlonghi-Tursi, Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1991).
