Introduction
First Year: Introductory Russian
For students
with no previous formal instruction in Russian. Students in this class
have a "modified Language Pledge" allowing them to use English (discreetly)
in the first two weeks and then with teachers̀ permission. Students
completing this course typically speak at the intermediate low level
and listen, read and write at the intermediate mid level according
to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. Primary Textbook: Golosa, Volumes
1-2 (Prentice-Hall, 2nd edition.) Pavlenko and staff.
Second Year: Basic Intermediate Russian
Students
in this class have usually had at least 90 hours of formal classroom
instruction before enrolling in this course. Students completing this
class typically demonstrate intermediate mid skills in speaking and
writing and intermediate high skills in listening and reading according
to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. Primary Textbook: Russian Stage
Two: Live from Moscow (Kendall/Hunt, new edition). Frost and staff.
Third Year: Advanced Intermediate Russian
Students in this class have usually had at least 250 hours of formal
classroom instruction before enrolling in this course. Upon completion
of this class, students typically demonstrate skills in the intermediate
mid to high range in speaking and writing, and advanced level skills
in listening and reading according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.
Primary Textbook: Grammatika v kontekste (McGraw-Hill). Rifkin and
staff.
Fourth Year: Advanced Russian
Students in this class have usually had at least 350 hours of
formal classroom instruction before enrolling in this course. Students
completing this class typically demonstrate advanced level speaking,
listening, reading and writing skills according to the ACTFL Proficiency
Guidelines. Primary Textbook: Focus on Russian (Wiley & Sons, 2nd
edition). Palatnik and staff.
