Town and College

The founders of the town of Middlebury dreamed of establishing a prosperous commercial community inhabited by educated and religious citizens. They realized that a college would help them achieve their goals by attracting prospective settlers and providing affordable education to future community leaders1. As a result Middlebury College was established in November 1800. Ever since, town and college have exerted financial, religious, social and cultural influence on each other.
