Jacob
Ross was typical of many of the men who were serving time away
from their families; he wrote home religiously and lived for letters
from home. Many of the letters Ross wrote to his wife expressed
disappointment for not receiving recent news from her or his children.
This letter from his daughter, Katherine, while arguably mundane
at times, is exactly what a father wants to receive. With this
letter he can feel connected to the every-day life of his family.
Katherine would like her father to be part of her daily life,
and writing to him with some of the details allows father and
child to stay connected. But obviously letters do not suffice,
and all correspondence between family and soldier include yearning
for their return. |
