Middlebury and World War I

Using primary documents, this site attempts to illustrate Middlebury's involvment and patriotism during World War I. The research contained in this site includes personal papers, letters, pamphlets, newspapers, and official college publications.The purpose of this site is to provide insight into the sentiment of the college during the Great War era.
Below is a pamphlet encouraging students to rally in McCullough Gymnasium around the banner of a call to service. Posters such as this were widely seen around campus during the Great War era.
Above, Victory in Europe Day is celebrated in the village of Middlebury featuring a parade of SATC students traveling from the campus through the center of the village.
Above is a photograph of the headquarters company of the Student Army Training Corps at Middlebury College. The SATC was instituted to help prepare students for war in the case that they were needed to fight and to assure them of a proper college education. The SATC helped pay for students tuition which helped the college's enrollment during the war.
