War! War!! January 30, 1847

Is now not the proper time to think on this subject? Is now not the time for our feelings to be aroused, for the welfare of our own country and for our own personal interest. The war which now exists between us and Mexico was beyond all doubt caused by the annexation of Texas, but she is now a member of our union and I think that the act of her annexation was very injudicious and unconstitutional and we all see the bad effects that have so far attended it. Can we wonder that the Mexican blood has been roused? She has had to much reason of apprehending that she is to be robbed of her most valuable domains. Still, her pride has gone before her prudence & her passion has outran her judgment: but again to our own government how is it being conducted? It is conducted by a James V. Polk and a George M. Dallus, but if a George Washington stood at the head of our government or at the head of our country affairs would be led in a different manner. Mr. Polk never will have the honorable name of Patre Putriu bestowed upon him. George M. Dallus never will do for his country what Robert Morris did. The very climate of Mexico is worse than the war, many a poor fellow went from home in health and vigor and his bones now lay bleaching on the […] grounds.
